Accent Wall Ideas – I’ve been having so much fun letting my creativity run wild with these DIY accent walls lately! I recently finished a really fun midcentury modern accent wall for my sister’s house and we are in love.

Who Doesn’t Love A Good Accent?

When I dreamed up this wall design, I really wanted to create something that even a novice DIYer could easily replicate. Yes it still requires a nail gun and a saw. But there are no tricky cuts or angles to worry about. The wall color is ‘Black Fox’ by Sherwin Williams. It’s a beautiful gray, but it has a brownish purple undertone. So, before you commit to this color, try it on your wall first! I think it looks amazing paired with her orange wooden floors.

This DIY midcentury modern accent wall tutorial is so easy that my sister, who has never used a saw, was able to do it. So proud of her! Now, let’s get to work!

I started by painting the entire wall gray. That way I don’t have to worry about going around the molding.

After my wall is painted and dried, we’re ready to cut the MDF trim and get to work! This wall will look so cool! The reason I say it can be duplicated by a beginner is because it’s all straight cuts and clean 45 degree angles. No joints, no corner wraps, no weird angles [you got it!]. Each straight cut received a 45 degree cut at the top or bottom. I added different lengths to keep things abstract. Again, it all comes down to your looks and creativity. Go with what you love and what you envision!

***When cutting, remember that your blade will stick out ⅛, so take that into account when you cut!

Math is not my forte, so many times I end up taping out my design so I can visualize the math on paper. This is a huge help and lets you tell exactly what it is!

Before I secure my first trim for this midcentury modern accent wall, I’m going to take some glue and lightly add to each trim. I like Loctite Heavy Duty because it grips the wall quickly and doesn’t move around. So we’re going to support it with glue – it allows you to keep some things straight and secure while working through everything.

Now I’m going to take my first piece and start about 2.5 inches away from the corner. My line is drawn there and I’m ready to space these out!

I place it carefully on the wall! Once I’m sure it’s level, I take my nail gun and put the nails on top of each other so that they form angles and cross each other on the wall. Since this is a linear pattern, I know I won’t be hitting across the studs, so it secures the molding to the wall. Very simple! You can get as creative as you want!

Now that we know the first piece is level, I’m going to take my spacer – the same width as the trim I’m using – to place between each piece and the rest of the space for this design pattern. It’s much easier and faster than measuring between each piece!

After all your pieces are attached to the wall, go back and fill all the nail holes with wood filler. From here, I’m going back to town with my orbital sander. It cleans up anything that needs to be sanded with that wood filler.

You’ll want to take your caulk gun to the corners of each piece of MDF trim, where you’ll stack it against the wall and fill it in so you have a clean, connected space with the wall.

Peel And Stick Accent Wall Ideas

I always get a lot of questions about caulk. My favorite is Alex Flex Premium Molding and Trim Sealant. It’s really great!

After that, I went back and painted all the trim pieces the same color as the accent wall. I can’t get all the side areas with my angled brush so now my artist brush out!

The gray I used in this DIY midcentury modern accent wall was Sherman Williams’ Black Fox, which pulls a bit of purple in her space because of the orange undertones on her hardwood flooring. I carried the color across the soffit to bring the space together and I love it!

This is where we start – a completely blank slate! This might scare some, but for me it opened up a world of possibilities!

In all seriousness, the best wall for an accent wall is usually the most visible or largest. In this case, I put the accent wall behind my bed because I want it to be the focal point of the room. An accent wall draws your eye, so it’s important to place an accent wall in a well-decorated space in the center.

I cut the half round into three different sizes, 13 1/4 inches, 18 1/4 inches, and 28 1/2 inches.

I first practiced the layout on the floor to make sure I liked the pattern. I played around with this for a while until I came up with a final pattern that suited my wall.

Accent Wall Ideas To Help Your Room Stand Out

Tip: You’ll need to measure your wall to see how many perfect patterns you can make in your space. Don’t forget this part! I marked the entire wall with a pencil so all my cuts were ready to go.

I cut two of the 5 inch wood rounds in half, then cut 3 of the 4 inch rounds in half. Then, on the wall, I used a level to find the center of the wall and mark a line from the ceiling to the ground.

I made a “T” out of the center of the 4 inch piece of wood and then continued to make the square.

It takes some patience but I promise it will be worth it!! I had to fill in all the nail holes which took a while, but it’s the tedious little tasks that take your project to the next level. Professionals always fill their nail holes and you should too!

Best Barnwood Accent Wall Ideas

What I love so much about wood accent walls is that one coat of paint can change the entire look! We originally painted this room a deep green blue (Behr Wanderlust), but a few months ago, after adding French doors to this room, I was ready for a change.

I love how a simple paint color change can completely transform a room. The accent wall looks great in this color too!
