Selecting The Perfect Area Rug
Rugs are one of our favorite ways to add warmth and interest to a room and really define a room. They help transform a room and make it whole, but buying them and knowing exactly what size works best for your space isn’t always easy. Today we’re sharing a guide to help you choose the perfect size rug for your space, and we’re also sharing some of our favorite rugs!
Rug Guide: A Room By Room Guide To Rug Sizes
When buying a rug, you must first consider the size, shape and layout of the room. You want to make sure that the rug is large enough to fit the room, because a rug that is too small can make the room feel cramped. and you’ll feel insecure, and the same goes for a rug that’s too big. That’s why it’s so important to measure.
Depending on how you want to arrange your furniture, you can choose different placement options for the rug. The three main placements for furniture and rugs are: just the front legs on the rug, all the furniture legs on the rug, or all the furniture except the coffee table (use the visual I created below). If you prefer to have all your furniture off the carpet apart from the coffee table, make sure the rug is at least as wide as your sofa.
Once you think you’ve decided on the placement and size, you can use masking tape to mock up the placement of the rug so you can better visualize the rug in your room.
You use a very similar process when choosing a rug for your bedroom. Be sure to consider the shape of the room, consider where the doors are located in the room, and also note the other furniture in the room (mantels, benches at the end of the bed, etc.). If you have a bench or ottoman at the end of your bed, you should make sure your rug is large enough to sit on and at least 12 inches away from it.
How To Choose A Dining Room Rug
Be sure to take measurements! We recommend choosing a rug that extends at least 12 to 24 inches on either side of the bed.
You can also use masking tape or a bed sheet to visualize the size of the carpet in the bedroom.
Once you’ve selected the right rug size for your space, it’s time to choose the rug itself! The living room is often a popular room in the home, so it’s important to choose a rug that will provide durability to the high-traffic area. We’ve selected some of our favorite durable rugs to share with you below.

To me, the rug is like the mascara of the room. One thing you just can’t forget, otherwise the room will feel like something is missing.
Throughout my home decorating journey, I have learned so many things to consider and avoid when shopping for rugs. And how to choose the most suitable one for each room.
The Ultimate Rug Guide: How To Pick The Perfect Rug Every Time!
Carpet style, size, and pile seem to be the three main aspects you need to consider before pulling the trigger. And of course staying within your budget because let’s face it, rugs can get expensive!
When we first bought our home, jute rugs were very stylish and I really loved the look and texture it brought to the room
Literally every carpet in our house was jute. But after constantly wearing them out and going through several different brands for each room, I learned that they just weren’t durable.
, I was paralyzed when I realized that I would most likely have to choose new rugs with patterns and different colors.
Things To Consider When Picking The Perfect Area Rug For Your House
If you know my design style at all, you know I stick to neutral, solid colors. So it took me weeks and weeks and a few returns to finally decide on our first non-jute rug, which is now in our living room.
When choosing a rug, style is probably the first thing you consider. Here is my rule of thumb:
The key here is balance. You don’t want your rug to compete with all the other “stuff” in the room. You either want it to be the star of the show or you want it to quietly compliment everything else.
If you like neutrals, look for rugs in earthy tones like browns, grays and greens. If you like color, I say go for whatever color combinations appeal to you.
Living Room Area Rugs: Placement, Size, And Style
Even today, there are many different carpet patterns. Traditional, geometric, plain, floral, vintage, natural, etc. If you’re not sure what pattern suits your style, I would find a website that specializes in rugs and browse through it. You can then narrow down your likes and dislikes from there.
To be honest, choosing the style of our new rugs was so difficult for me at first. But now that I know what I like, it’s been so fun to see how these new rugs improve our rooms.
I find that sizing a rug is pretty easy once you know the “rules” for the size you need for a room. But if you buy a rug that’s too small or too big, it can really throw off the design of the room.
These are great rules, but there are situations where you may need to choose a different size. For example, our guest bedroom has a queen bed, but I could only fit a 5×8 in the room.

Carpet pile is the density of the fibers or basically the thickness of the carpet. I didn’t look into this aspect when I bought my rugs, but I’ve learned that it’s actually quite important.
Since our house is quite small (1370 square meters), every single carpet is walked on every day. We have a very active chocolate lab and an even more active toddler, so our rugs get quite a lot of traffic.
The more traffic, the more wear and tear. So now I only buy low pile rugs. They’re easy to vacuum, they’re easy to clean, you never know when there’s a spot that’s more traveled than another.
Since low pile rugs are quite thin, I add a slightly thicker rug pad underneath. With or without a rug pad, I still prefer the way they feel to thick, shaggy rugs.
