I’m so excited to share my mom’s mid-century modern inspired dining room makeover with you today! Since designing this place, the world has turned upside down and thus it took a long time to complete this change and the design changed little. We also ended up painting and hanging wallpaper on the hottest day of the year – definitely not the plan, huh. But it was totally worth it because we both loved how it turned out! This dining room makeover also extends to the adjacent living room, with fresh paint and some furniture/accessories, but I plan to do a proper makeover there in the future. For now, at least it’s better to complement the beautiful decoration of the dining room we created. I’m going to give you a tour and talk about some of my design decisions and then I’ll follow up next week with some DIY tutorials for everything from hanging wallpaper to sewing curtains – a fun little DIY With you can find. .

I’m so excited to share these photos – although I’ll admit it’s hard to photograph this apartment. It gets a lot of light, but it’s different from my own house, so there was a bit of a learning curve and I definitely didn’t fully grasp how warm and cozy this place is.

Here’s a reminder of before (you can see the full tour of “before” in this post):
Not shabby before, it was just a rental: beige walls and beaten white trim, a simple light fixture and mismatched curtain rods left behind by previous tenants. My mom lost her house a few years ago so I wanted to turn her rental apartment into a place that felt more like home.
The most practical choice for rental apartments, but we went for it! I’m probably going to regret removing it when mom finally moves (fingers crossed her landlord loves it so much that it can stay, lol) but for now it really makes the dining room so pretty and calming. Feels because hygge and west are wallpapers. Screen printed by hand and look really high end in person. We chose Hygge & West’s Bloom in Taupe (c/o Hygge & West). When I shared the choice in my Instagram stories there was a lot of skepticism – I think you’re surprised I chose a neutral one! But I chose this wallpaper keeping my mother’s taste in mind. She’s always loved this pattern, plus her style gravitates more towards soft neutrals (remember the gray and pink kitchen makeover we tackled, years ago?). Although it is very subtle, I knew this wallpaper would be a beautiful backdrop for some slightly bolder choices, such as the patterned rug, soft blue ceiling and green silk curtains. I love the movement in the design (it has an organic quality that I love), and the clean, crisp mid-century modern vibe. We loved it so much that we scrapped our plans for artwork in the dining room (for now) because we just wanted to showcase this beautiful piece as much as possible.
My mom loved my own dining room Loloi rug so we chose a very similar rug for her space (c/o Loloi). The rug (from the Ziva collection: ZV-04 Denim) has the same hand-woven wool design, but with a slightly busier pattern and a more modish color palette. The rug defined the color palette for the dining room and I picked out good colors for the ceiling color and curtain fabric. Like me, my mother prefers calm, a cohesive and harmonious color palette gives a space. Interestingly, recently my mother has embraced a cooler color palette – but while I like a bright turquoise and teal, she prefers a soft grey-blue or navy. Although, to be honest, we’re meeting in the middle because she loves some jewel tones and I love some really soft grays and green blues.

They are eye catching so let’s get to the right accessories! FinnStyle generously provided some beautiful new navy blue caste Helmi plates and bowls, along with beautiful Iittala Alto vases in the same stunning color – you’ve already seen them in my Mother’s Day Lake Superior inspired tablescape. The ocean blue color really pops against the clean Iittala dishes and glassware my mom already owns, which we’ve seen on Thrift and eBay over the years. Brass flatware is something I also did a while back (there’s a really nice brass flatware option you can buy, with great reviews). Ultimately it’s bound to be an Etsy shop because my mom has her own beautiful flatware, but I loved the brass chandelier for these photos. The blue-grey napkins belonged to my grandmother and I painted them years ago – they just seemed to work so well in this space. I am so excited that Mom has a beautiful new dining room because we both love setting a beautiful table. We have accumulated many treasures over the years and we love to enjoy them and use them.
I’m still avoiding going to the shops, so I stopped on my way to pick up flowers and I love the yellow sun pops.
I am obsessed with Pimm Chandelier, c/o Kuchler. I reached for these because I saw this light online and loved the look of the brass finish and glass shades – they remind me so much of my own triple bubble dining room light fixture that I have. Mother had wished for a long time. So this was a way to bring that look into her dining room, in an even more sophisticated and glam way. I think the mid-century modern look plays beautifully with the wallpaper and I love the warm gold finish against the cool blue gray ceiling.
By the time I had chosen the wallpaper and carpet, I had already made a list of favorites on the online fabric store’s website, so we could sew some custom drapes. I remembered this beautiful silk and was sure it would complement the Lului rug perfectly – and it does! It’s so dreamy – I have a few videos in my Instagram stories (saved as a highlight: ORC 2020) – and you can see the incredible shine of the silk. I think the silk plays a bit too formal in this space, which is appropriate for the era of this building. Also, my mom never had a dining room – my childhood home only had an eat-in kitchen – so I wanted this dining room to feel really grand (even though it’s small). The online fabric store generously provided the silk and I will share a tutorial soon. The creamy white curtain rod is what I had in my house before I enlarged the windows. They don’t fit anymore, so I’m glad my mom can use them.

We teamed up with this vintage table and chair – and matching credenza – at Kijiji (you can read more about them here)! Mom hated the MCM teak chairs I loaned her because they were so uncomfortable. These chairs are very comfortable but still have the clean and minimal MCM lines that she loves. The matching Sandza was just the right size for the wall just outside the dining room – a welcome coincidence, as there’s no room for more furniture inside the dining room but having the credenza outside the door is still practical. I shared a post about how I quickly refinished the set and reupholstered the chairs in blues and grays in a beautiful linen blade fabric.
A coordinating set wasn’t my original plan but the scale and style (and price!) of this set was too good to pass up – and I love the harmony it lends to the spaces.
Want to make a colorful ceiling! I’ve done painted floors, painted cabinets, painted walls – this was the final frontier, yes and luckily mom was game! Because the wallpaper was so neutral, this was the perfect place to try a soft colored ceiling. It’s also beautifully plastered, and the ceiling height is actually about 9 feet, so it was worth highlighting (my own ceiling is not worth highlighting, which is why I’ve never had a painted ceiling at home )! The ceiling was painted SW-6491 Open Air (c/o Sherwin-Williams), and it’s the perfect yellow climate without looking like a nursery pastel — it has a subtle and muted quality. We liked it so much, we even took it to the ceiling of the living room, for a nice harmony between the two with some open spaces. I am currently looking for this exact color swatch for a project at home.
For the trim in the dining room and the walls in the adjoining living room, we picked a color from the wallpaper background: SW 7566 Westhighland White (also
