I believe you can love your home the way it is AND have the power to design and make big changes to make it better.
Warm And Welcoming Guest Rooms
It’s a room challenge every day!! Along with many other designers, I have been working on a room makeover for the past 8 weeks. This event is held twice a year and I have attended several times. This time I created a guest room with a mid-century modern plus updated traditional feel and I’m so happy with it!!!

If you are new to this blog from the ORC site, welcome!! I’m Suzannah, a longtime DIYer and design lover, currently working on our 1937 Tudor Revival style home, our second fixer upper. I have a 2-year-old son and a baby on the way, but my husband and I have done almost all the work in our home ourselves! I’ve blogged about everything so you can check out my own tutorial page and room. You can also follow me and my projects on Instagram! I’m also the host of the Your Home Story podcast!
You can read everything about the history of the room, even before the photos, here. It belongs to my friends Gabriela and Matt who have been hosting a lot of out-of-town guests and wanted to give them a more finished space (more functional as well). Their home was built in 1961 and they love the mid-century modern style, but they took a lot of inspiration for this room with warm and earthy tones, softer textures and some contemporary style. I combined their favorite elements and helped them choose everything for this room – we started completely from scratch!!
The bed was the first thing we definitely settled on. I love this!! So affordable, very cool statement piece, great color. And the original doors and floors look great with teak and wood.
Nightstands are super affordable, like $65 and made of solid wood. They are smaller than I would normally use for a queen size bed, but we basically filled the wall perfectly (leaving room for the bi-folding door on the right side) with the headboard and nightstands.
A Warm And Welcoming
Since this room is small and tiny, lamps instead of lamps were perfect! There wouldn’t be much room for anything else if there was a big lamp on one. We did the “Magic Light Trick” and used puck lights instead of wiring and it worked great!!!
One of the features they needed to fix was that they actually use the dresser here for some of their stuff and they needed a bigger one. Plus, every guest room needs a mirror!! This is an amazing deal at $60 for 24″x30″ and looks great horizontally or vertically. And the brass connects to the original hardware in the room and the brass on the lights.
Choosing the linens was a bit of a challenge as everything had to be online and it’s hard to see how all the colors go together without seeing at least a few in person.
This guest room is now much more welcoming and the homeowners are very happy to have it ready for their next guests (if people can travel again!).

Since it’s a rental, I’m somewhat limited in how much I can do, so I rely on a lot of texture and layering with the bedding. In fact, this is the key to a cozy bedroom, layers of texture! I’m hoping to do some kind of wall treatment on the focal wall, but haven’t decided what yet. I’m thinking of a nice lime wash, so we’ll see. For now, I started by replacing our old upholstered bed with a four poster we had in a guest room. To make it more updated and sleeker, I painted it with black chalk paint along with our dresser and I love the way it looks. It just gave the furniture a fresh new look and added a lot of drama to the room.
This is what it looks like now. Can you believe how much pop and sophistication it added to the room?
I also wanted it to be very warm, cozy and atmospheric. So I decided to go with a very warm and neutral color palette to complement the black. I started with this beautiful rug to anchor everything and set the tone for the theme of the space. The mix of color and pattern is very good.
Bedroom Color Trends & Inspiration
The key to making a great bed is different layers. Don’t be afraid to combine different types of fabrics and patterns. Just make sure you start with a color theme of 3-4 colors and stay within that perimeter to keep the layers cohesive. I started with a beautiful natural linen quilt with matching Euro quilts. Then I layered it on a beautiful patterned blanket. You can also add a quilt or bedspread. Then I spread a light, thick blanket for the last layer
For the pillows, I decided to keep it minimal than usual and create more color contrast. So I used the Euro shams line for the background, added 2 textured brown throw pillows and finished with a beautiful lumbar pillow.
Another accessory that can create a cozy atmosphere in the bedroom is mirrors. The reflection of light and the inclusion of all elements in the room. I added 2 curved mirrors to the nightstands so they would reflect off the dresser mirror. I also kept the accents in the room more earthy and warm and used soft greens for some color. Bringing elements of nature into the room also lends the space a friendly atmosphere.
I hope this has inspired you to create your own cozy bedroom. Having your bedroom comfortably furnished contributes to your overall health and well-being.
