We moved into our “forever home”, a small 1920’s beach cottage, eleven years ago and every inch of the house has been restored, renovated, refreshed and remodeled.

My husband, two boys, Jax and Ollie, and I live on a bay in Puget Sound. located in Washington state. If you are not familiar with this body of water, it is basically the sound of the Pacific Northwest which is an inlet of the Pacific Ocean and part of the Salish Sea.

It’s that time again when sunny days are the new norm, and open windows allow fresh air to flow through your home.

You don’t have to have a coastal home to look like a beach cottage for the summer. Using coastal elements like seashells, vintage sticks, or glass bottles to decorate with is not only easy but relatively inexpensive.

As you can see, I have a small space to work with so it can be quite challenging to decorate my house without being cluttered. This has been a challenge I have faced since we moved here.

The trick to a clutter-free (okay, who am I kidding… fairly clutter-free) space in our little cottage is to pick just a few of my favorite things and try to declutter show.

There are so many coastal living room decorations that you can add, such as sea shells, flowers in glass jars, or coastal inspired books.

A gray and white striped scarf I bought in Greece last year was the basis for my coastal cottage coffee table vibe. It added much needed texture and added warmth to the stark white table.

One of my favorite beach cottage decor pieces to display in the summer season is a vintage glass container that I fill with sand and sea shells.

​​​​​​​​I found this narrow whitewashed basket at HomeGoods a few weeks ago and decided to replace my vintage wooden dough bowl for mixing. This was more of a beachy style.

The water glass vases were also from HomeGoods and were a great price. Sorry I can’t remember how much they were now, but I bought 3 so I must have loved the price. I know they were under $10 each.

A vintage white enamel oval tray is perfect for displaying a glass float, starfish and clean cotton candle. I love this fragrance for summer.

There is nothing better than bringing fresh flowers into the house all summer long. There are so many vessels to choose from when setting up, including glass bottles, mason jars, and vintage galvanized buckets.

For those of you who are new to Shiplap and Shells, you may not realize that I grow a cut flower garden every summer so I can have fresh flowers ANYTIME I want during the season.

Sea glass, coral, and marine decor are a great way to create a beach house look that exudes coastal charm.

Some beach house decorating ideas include vintage books in coastal blues and shades of beige and sand, glass fishing floats, and starfish and seashells.

For a more coastal feel, incorporate textures and natural fibers into your beach cottage decor. A jute rug adds both visual interest and a beachy feel to your living space.

Wicker baskets and furniture are a great coastal home decor option for the season and play beautifully with the summer whites.

When it comes to decorating a coastal cottage, shades of blue are an obvious choice. Choose bright blues that remind you of the sea to relax.

Because we are outside on our deck so much during the summer, a handful of light is available when the sun goes down and the temperature drops.

Wooden sticks, dough bowls, and vintage wooden stools used as side tables are other coastal decorating ideas for your home during the summer.

The white walls of my longlap are a white canvas that reflects white, making the space feel brighter and more open. It also provides a perfect backdrop for my cottage decor.

Modern Coastal Decor Ideas To Enhance Home’s Look

The oversized hanging basket in the corner was a great investment piece. Since the summer cut flower garden hasn’t started growing yet, I filled the basket with dried eucalyptus in the meantime.

Our bright and cheerful coastal kitchen is inspired by a beachy color palette, open shelving and seaside decor.

We were lucky to be able to keep this black cabinet here next to the kitchen. This is where we store the old white ironstone but it had no place in our small kitchen.

I get a lot of comments about having a piece of flooring that separates the two rooms. This is because the kitchen was slightly raised and not level when the floor came together after a wall was built.

Modern Coastal Decor Ideas

There used to be a wall dividing the kitchen and the living room. There was only a small opening into the kitchen. You wouldn’t see the board at all.

The summer colors I chose this year were white and a mix of shades of blue, including navy, aqua, and mid-blue tones. This color palette gives the kitchen a sense of calm and a connection to the sea.

This year I added yellow accents with bowls, lemons, and pillows on my window seats to the color scheme. but you could use sandy beiges or corals with your beach cottage decor.

I love incorporating vintage pieces like white stoneware and this scale on the shelves too to create interest.

Coastal Beach Style Decor On A Budget

We made the iron pipe pot rack for more storage. We hang our vintage copper pans and utensils, colanders, baskets, and dried flowers.

Our kitchen island is a repurposed antique dresser we found on Craigslist. Our contractor installed a butcher block top he got from a Dunkin Donuts that was going out of business.

I’m still looking for the perfect vintage barstools to sit on here. I have always had mismatched ones and will celebrate the day I find the perfect set.

This old cabinet, which was orange when I first saw it, was love at first sight for me. I found it at an antique store in Gig Harbor over 20 years ago. For those of you who live in this area, the store was located in the same building that now houses the Dolly Mama Boutique. I loved that place and miss it every day.

How To Use Coastal Boho Decor In Your Home For The Ultimate Relaxed Style

I love that there are glass doors to display certain things and closed doors to store the not so nice kitchen items.

This is probably the boldest color I’ve ever painted a piece of furniture but it’s the first thing people see when they walk into the kitchen.

Whether they are picnic baskets, hanging from the pot rack, or used for storage and organization, they make a good statement.

We don’t have a formal dining room but we do have this dining space in the kitchen that looks out over the bay.

Coastal Farmhouse Ideas For Every Room

I love my rustic farmhouse table from Dutch Crafters in this space with wicker chairs and window seats.

We put the window seat after living here for a few years. There wasn’t much room for entertainment so this works nicely. The new seats also gave me extra drawers underneath for storage.
