She’s a wise old gal who is Mother Nature, and she’s the last thing you want to include in your industrial design. So many materials in industrial interiors come from nature, but they are hard and durable. Plants and flowers retain the natural aesthetic, but in a much softer sense.
Get your flowers in the colors we talked about earlier, like pinks, yellows, and oranges, or play it safe and simple by placing plants in the room in round pots with rich texture.
If you’re in the kitchen, herbs are a very easy way to bring greenery into the room and will make the space cozier.

This Los Angeles renovation was inspired by traditional English kitchens, but Celestin McGlynn and Lisa Nakamura of Spec + Sage ensured it had an eclectic and contemporary twist. Craftsman-style home located in the vibrant Silver Lake neighborhood, an area known for its mix of traditional and modern homes. Their goal was to honor the original architecture, history and bones of the space while giving it a fresh feel. The couple tells more.
The clients are a young couple with two young children. The wife is an Emmy-nominated film and television producer, and her husband, a high school sweetheart, is a senior vice president at a commercial real estate agency. They wanted to update most of the downstairs level for their growing family. Specifically in the kitchen, they dreamed of an area where they could comfortably feed their children without formally setting up a separate dining room. Since there is only one bathroom downstairs, they wanted to make the powder room a great guest experience.
In the kitchen we wanted to keep the original cabinetry as it was custom built in and in great condition. However, the rest of the kitchen needed a lot of love and attention. We painted the cabinets Benjamin Moore Oxblood to make a bold statement and paired it with a more neutral countertop, tile, and walls to really let the color shine. The brown, linoleum flooring was torn up, and we created custom mosaic floor tile colors and patterns as a nod to the era of the home.

It was important to visually organize the space and make the space bigger without compromising too much storage space. So the upper cabinets on either side of the hood were removed and we wrapped the hood to hide the upgraded stainless steel that looked out of place in this traditional kitchen. Echoing the craftsman style of the home, a newly built-in breakfast nook added custom board and batten wall detailing. The bench cushions were upholstered in gold Dedar velvet to highlight the gold detailing of the mosaic flooring. One of our favorite details from this project is the unvarnished brass fixtures (from Rohl) and hardware (from Rejuvenation) against the oxblood red cabinets in the kitchen.
The purpose of the powder was to create a dynamic impression without taking up space. Before starting the project, the entire bathroom was white, and during the renovation it was discovered that the Benjamin Moore Newt Green paint color chosen for the beadboard was almost identical to the original color underneath the layers of white. The client chose the wallpaper based on a favorite restaurant she frequents, and the lamp is from one of our favorite lighting designers, Entler, based in Los Angeles.
The clients wanted the room to be bright and white because it doesn’t get a lot of sun. The dining room chairs were reupholstered in Dedar blue velvet to bring some color into the room. The gorgeous Hector & Finch light fixture was a worthy splurge.
As part of the scope of work, the hardwood floors on the lower level had to be replaced due to uneven foundations and water damage. The main challenge was finding hardwood floors that matched the era of the house and were the right thickness to even out the foundation. Another challenge was getting the right colors for the custom mosaic tiles in the kitchen, as many of the colors we liked were out of stock or discontinued. Otherwise, we were lucky to work with great clients who trusted our vision and had similar styles to us.
