Interior Renovation For A Fresh New Start – Lively makeover for vacant natives brings vitality to Upper West Side co-op in 1908 landmark
When a couple in the 50s went house hunting on New York’s Upper West Side, they didn’t know they’d be the first to find their designer. “They called immediately,” says interior designer John Willey. “They had seen a renovation I had done, liked it, and asked who did it. But although they liked the design, they needed more space and continued their home search.”
Interior Renovation For A Fresh New Start
Empty nesters, the couple also wanted to start fresh, in a style that was different from the sleek and modern, almost showroom look they were used to; think dark espresso woods. The couple soon found a place on Central Park West, just two blocks from where they lived, but the apartment needed updating, including mechanicals such as air conditioning, which led to a complete overhaul of both the decor and the floor plan. . “It was very ornate,” says Willey, who submitted his plans to Carlo Zaskorski of Zaskorski & Associates Architects, “with heavy moldings, crown moldings and a black-and-white marble foyer that looked like a hotel lobby.” Thus began a complete transformation to transform the spaces into spaces that are both timeless and youthful.
Fresh Start — Dig Furniture Bank
Early on, general contractors Jeffrey Sandriuter, the project manager, and Robert Madia, who served as project manager, discovered one surprising surprise. At the end of that unusually spacious foyer was an original leaded glass window from the landmark building from 1908 that was boarded up. “It was behind a wall,” Sandreuter says. “But it was beautiful glass. So we took it out, sent it to our leading glazing specialist and restored it.”
Willie then created drama in the foyer by covering the walls in a cafe-toned paper, adding a custom-designed graphic rug with pinstripes and a pair of polished antique bronze light fixtures with frosted tubular bulbs hanging from the lampshade. he painted the ceiling with beige varnish. “The high gloss ceiling really packs a punch,” says general contractor Scott Hobbs, who oversaw the project with Sandreuter and Madia.
The foyer sets a calm yet sophisticated tone for the rest of the interior. Although the homeowners initially requested a little more color than they were used to, Willy kept the palette soft with pale shades of blue and terra cotta, as seen in the living room, where the designer chose sofas for their shape. “The furniture is grouped around the fireplace,” he says, “and when you walk in, you see pieces from the back and sides. I just love the sensually shaped back of the sofa. They are beautiful and attractive. The chairs have Greek key side arms, and the beautiful Carrara marble table is on carved casters, so it’s less one-of-a-kind and can be moved around.”
As the homeowners kept their large stock of dinnerware and serving pieces, Willie addressed the need for storage with a beautiful oak built-in on one wall of the dining room, where an open display of vintage china and family heirlooms combine; closed doors with antique mirror panels. Willie put together the built-in with an oak-topped table and the owners’ existing side chairs. She then added wingback chairs covered in chenille in a shade of blue that matches the walls perfectly.

However, one of Willie’s favorite treatments is on the master bedroom walls. “It’s a stunning wallpaper that features a soft cascading pattern that looks like rain or an artist brushstroke. It’s great because it complements all the subtle patterns in this room.” For example, the designer fell in love with the Chinese flower motif rug, but was also a little worried about the diamond pattern on the plush hood. “But the softness of all colors does not conflict,” he says.
Since the couple’s grown children are in college, they decided they could live perfectly fine without the second and third bedrooms they had, opting instead to easily convert the office and den into guest rooms. The husband’s study was designed around an antique 19th-century Chinese folding screen he inherited from his mother, which hangs over a built-in sofa/daybed covered in aubergine-hued velvet. The use of lustrous fabrics continues in the study, where bookcases are built around an 80-inch mohair-silk sleeper sofa in a sharp bordeaux shade. The study’s 1960s Danish chairs were a real find, Willey says. “They really make the room.” The metallic paper texture on the walls provides a beautiful shine.
Now the layout perfectly suits the needs of the couple who also love their stylish interior design. “Space is always at a premium in New York,” says Hobbs, “but John did a great job of repurposing an old space for today’s lifestyle.” Believe it or not, 2022 is almost here.
