Japanese Inspired Tea Room Remodel – Located near the city of Český Těšín, Czech Republic, and designed to serve as a small resting place for visitors to Hrabinka Lake is a beautiful looking building called the Tea House Pavilion. The Tea House Pavilion was designed by Slovakian studio Grau Architects and is a new lamp-like structure with Japanese design elements. It serves as a place to relax and unwind for those who want to relax after spending some time at the lake, or simply look out over it from a chair.
The pavilion was built using spruce, plywood, and white cloth, and is a modern interpretation of traditional Japanese architecture. This is seen in the use of materials, and the simple but complex nature of the structure. It features a low table in the middle, which can be used for tea parties, or other necessary time alone. The spruce wood used to build the pavilion was sourced locally, which allows the pavilion to blend in with its surroundings, while also helping to keep the budget efficient. “We decided to use private spruce wood from the local area, comparing the design, our personal needs, the budget, and the current market offer, which was very scarce after the Covid-19 pandemic. Wood ages naturally and we accept it,” said Grau Architects.

Occupying nine square meters, the lower part of the building is covered with plywood, while the upper half is covered with a dark red fabric. The pavilion is inspired by traditional tea houses, and can be used for tea ceremonies, but is mainly kept as a place to relax. “This house is designed for anonymous visitors but at the same time for anyone who wants to spend some time by the river and meditate for a while,” said the studio.

The floor plan of the pavilion is square, and measures three by three meters, which is enough space for six people to sit around a low table. At night, the pavilion lights up, giving off a beautiful light-like vibe. “The bright and clear open building refers to traditional Japanese interiors but brings modern elements into it,” the studio concluded.

Created with this unique design brief was Ascend Design, a design team led by Managing Director Jasper Goh. “They wanted a cool Instagram-friendly room because they need to take a lot of pictures of the products in the house,” says Goh.
Being a new unit, it came with standard HDB finishes such as homogenous tiles and whitewashed walls – a blank canvas for renovation.
Kitchen: The design team removed the original wall that separated the kitchen from the living and dining areas, creating one seamless social space. The entrance to the work yard is finished with a glass partition, allowing natural light to bathe the space.
The whole concept of production was greatly influenced by the beauty of Japanese tea houses, especially in accordance with the owners of matcha shops.

Standard bathroom: This glass-enclosed bathroom allows light to reach the entire bathroom, the diagonally placed door making space for walking. Floating cabinets and oval glass keep the space feeling light, without a sense of bulk.
The renovation reduced the renovation of the floor structures, the main change is the transformation of one of the common rooms in the closet. All the work was very much focused on advanced treatment and new sculpting.

And of course it is Instagrammable, thanks to the number of vignettes created with open shelves, simple and neutral utensils ready to serve as an inviting backdrop for the ritual of drinking matcha.
Main suite: A major architectural change to the original floor plan was made to convert one of the common rooms into a walk-in closet for the main suite. The owners of the house wanted the two rooms to be separate, so the team put a pocket door between them. It has the same white color as the wall, so it blends in seamlessly when closed, creating a clean, structured look.
“I made sure that every corner of the house has a beautiful background that is different from the others, but they go well with the overall theme,” explains the designer.
