Outdoor Oasis: Creating Your Dream Space

By | March 23, 2025

Outdoor Oasis: Creating Your Dream Space – I shared my apartment balcony discovery last week and figured I’d follow up with more outdoor inspiration because it’s pretty obvious I’m not the only one who spends ALL of my time enjoying my outdoor space. Whether you have a backyard, patio, front porch, roof or balcony like me, I’m sure you’re looking for all the tips and tricks you can get to turn it into a cozy outdoor oasis (plus where to shop for all the good deals!)

As I mentioned in my balcony post, I’ve been adamant about creating a cozy space that’s essentially an outdoor living room, so today I thought I’d break down the basics for creating that same vibe in your home. And I promise, no matter how much space you have available, it can be achieved! SO many sites offer small space furniture options, and if you have a larger space, there are ways to break it up to make it cozy and comfortable.

Outdoor Oasis: Creating Your Dream Space

Once you’ve chosen the general vibe of your space, it’s easy to start buying things. I think it’s important to have a vision with a color scheme or textures in mind when thinking about your outdoor space. As for me, apart from the palm pattern rug, I wanted to stick to mostly neutral tones, black and wood furniture with white cushions and natural materials for accents. Achieving that vision made it easy for me to buy planters, small tables and other decor for the area on the fly. I’m also not looking for another chair or two for my balcony and it was very easy to find something that would look cohesive.

Opt for COMFORTABLE CHAIRS and SOFAS instead of a rigid dining table and chairs. If you have a small space and don’t think you can fit a traditional “conversation set” in it, there are now many small cushioned chairs available. Individual pieces are also sold separately so you can choose exactly which items suit your space. And if you have a larger outdoor space, I would prefer an outdoor living room and then add a dining set later.

Don’t forget about LIGHTING. Not only does the lighting create an atmosphere, a pleasant ambience for your outdoor oasis, but it is also functional. I suggest a combination of strings, hanging lanterns, floor lanterns and candles. Also, if you’re hesitant about burning candles outside, especially if you have kids or pets, I suggest using LED candles for indoor lanterns, and using citronella candles only on stable surfaces that won’t tip over easily.

PLANTS AND GREENNESS are essential for outdoor spaces. If you’re landscaping, chances are you’ll naturally have greenery to work with, but if your outdoor space is a deck, patio, balcony, or veranda, you can bring greenery into your space with planters, living walls, and herb gardens. Pay attention to the amount of sunlight your space receives so that when you go to the nursery you get the right type of plants. I also like to use plants to create privacy, you can see on my balcony that I used a large rectangular planter to give myself a bit more privacy than my neighbors balconies that are close to mine.

It might seem a little crazy to add PILLOWS to an outdoor space, but I can’t recommend it enough. There are special outdoor cushions that can withstand the weather, but are also easy enough to cover or bring inside when the weather is bad. Cushions are not only essential for that “cozy” vibe you’re looking for, but they’re also a great, inexpensive way to personalize your space, add a splash of color or update a space. Layering textures in any part of your home is key to creating a cozy, inviting atmosphere.

Before And After Backyard Makeovers

Don’t be afraid to add a PROGRAM to your space, especially if your outdoor space is covered. There are outdoor rugs made to withstand the elements and they really transform an outdoor space (or any space). In larger spaces, a rug can also help you visually separate each area, for example, you can have one rug in the area where you will place the dining table and chairs, and another rug where the outdoor living area is. Although these two spaces could be next to each other, the carpet shows that they are “separated”.

If you have a larger space, consider adding a parasol, fire pit, trellis or more to your outdoor oasis so I thought I’d round up my favorites! Your outdoor space is more than just a piece of land; it has the potential to transform into a personal oasis that reflects your unique style and offers a haven for relaxation and rejuvenation.

A few years ago, I set out on a mission to turn my backyard into a relaxing and inviting space where I could relax and spend time outside comfortably. Since then, I’ve spent countless hours lounging in a hammock, reading, eating meals with friends, and bird watching in my backyard. I found so much joy in my backyard—literally!

Here are some of my secrets for creating a personal oasis in your backyard. Get ready to unleash your creativity and unlock the full potential of your outdoor retreat.

Garden Room Ideas To Enhance Your Backyard And Lifestyle

Every great backyard design starts with a vision. Close your eyes and imagine how you want your dream backyard to look and feel. Do you imagine a lush green paradise with various plants and trees? Or perhaps a modern outdoor entertainment area with stylish furniture and a sparkling pool? Take some time to explore different styles and themes that work for you.

A beautiful yard should not only be visually attractive, but also functional. Consider how you will use the space and plan accordingly. Do you need a designated area for dining and cooking? Do you want to install a fireplace or a comfortable seating area? Think about the activities you enjoy and make sure your design accommodates them seamlessly.

To create a truly peaceful oasis, bring nature into your backyard design. Consider adding water features like a soothing fountain or small pond. Integrate natural materials such as stone, wood and gravel to add texture and authenticity to your outdoor space. Remember to include plants and flowers that thrive in your climate, providing color, fragrance and a sense of peace.

Privacy is key to fully enjoying your backyard. You can use clever landscaping techniques to create a sense of seclusion. I installed a chain link fence with privacy slats around the perimeter of my yard and then planted tall shrubs in front of the fence to improve privacy and hide the fence.

Crafting Dream Homes

Extend the utility of your yard by installing lighting that creates an enchanting atmosphere after the sun goes down. Install outdoor lighting, track lighting and accent lights to highlight key features. Consider using low voltage LED lights for energy efficiency and longevity. These are my favorite outdoor lights.

Finally, complete your dream backyard oasis by carefully selecting outdoor furniture and accessories that reflect your style and enhance comfort. Invest in durable, weatherproof pieces that can withstand the elements. Add comfy pillows, outdoor rugs and decorative accents to create a warm and inviting ambiance.
