Vintage-inspired Home Accents – Some people’s travels inspire their decor; others collect childhood memories through their collections. Sharon Brandt simply focused on her family to find unique ways to transform her new house into a vacation home through light and bright spaces. Reinvented style. The architectural gable gives the room an outstanding vintage cottage style. The rest of the elements are the result of a simple reinvention: Sharon made the flower pillow from curtain panels bought at the world market.
Vintage-inspired Home Accents
The dining room, kitchen and family room make up what Sharon calls the great room of the home. He wanted it to be warm, inviting and “comfortable to put your feet up”. He used gray as a neutral color in the family room area. Sharon enjoys decorating the shelf for the seasons, holidays and parties by changing accessories.

Second-Life home furnishings. The front living room features a number of interesting features, including an architectural gable: a headboard from Eastlake Furniture. It was dark, so Sharon stripped it and painted it to look shabby. He also painted the small sideboard gray-green (he mixed the colors) and white, so the top remained stained. The coffee table was found in a trash can. The trestle table was $40 at a thrift store. Sharon painted the bottom and left the top stained. Roses from the English cottage garden are on the coffee table in an antique milk glass from a thrift store. Sharon stacked used baskets and made the draperies from cream-colored linen.

When Sharon and her husband moved into their newly built four-bedroom home in Redlands, California, the walls were white and the floors were carpet and linoleum. “We put travertine on the kitchen floor and replaced the carpet with plank flooring in the rest of the house,” says Sharon.
Vintage meal. Sharon, a fan of typography, often creates her own murals. In the dining room, there is a FRUIT STAND sign that he created to capture the mood of summer. The lantern sideboard is a mid-century piece that Sharon found at a thrift store for $50. The 7-Up caddy was a $10 used item. The lights came from a yard sale and she painted them white. Sharon found the stained glass window at an antique shop 25 years ago for $40.

“I wanted a streamlined, simple look in the kitchen with simple, glass-inset Shaker cabinets. My son, Clayton, installed beadboard, base and crown moldings, and fireplaces. We replaced the granite countertops with quartz and painted the walls robin-blue to add color.”
Writing on the wall. Sharon made the BAKERY sign in the kitchen using a Cameo electronic cutter, a typeface machine that cuts vinyl into stencils.
“Every Sunday we all have dinner together in the kitchen: my husband, our four sons, their spouses and our grandchildren. We talk about the week and enjoy each other’s company,” says Sharon. “My daughters-in-law help me cook. In addition to food, we make wonderful memories together. There is always laughter and children running around. I needed a big kitchen where everything could happen and everyone could be comfortable.”
Innovative update. Sharon gave her built-in cabinets a stylish boost by replacing the shelves with wood with a richer finish. Since you removed the doors, these cabinets are now a decorative focal point for your colorful cottage style accessories.
Art Deco Style Ideas To Glamorize Your Home
This loft contains children’s chairs that Sharon collected for her cute country cottage architecture design. The solid piece of wood is a Hoosier cabinet (often used as a pantry when designed many years ago). He bought it in an antique store in the 1980s. The gumball machine belonged to his mother. Her mother filled it with sweets for her grandchildren. He hung architectural salvage pieces on the big wall. “It’s more interesting to have architectural salvage elements, rather than one big picture on the wall,” says Sharon. He found the architectural pieces at thrift and antique stores to add style to the cottage.
The bright colors tie the house together and everyone loves this vintage gumball machine.
Sharon explained her decorating approach when faced with a large wall in her colorful vintage cottage. “I like to have one main focal point and leave space on either side of it,” she says. “Start from the center [and move] outward, and don’t try to fill the whole space, because then the eye has nowhere to focus.” Sharon loves to decorate for Christmas, so she chose a neutral background so that she can change accessories according to the seasons. “Old windows and high-quality, colorful silk flowers are my favorite decorations,” she says.
Bedroom Heirloom. This spare bedroom is a mix of old and new. Sharon finished this yard dresser with paint and new knobs for a charming vintage cottage look.
Tips For Adding Vintage Home Decor To Your Current Design Style
Sharon painted the white walls of the master bedroom a more soothing blue. She sewed curtains and lined them with blackout material. He created the shelf above the bed with wedges found in an antique store. To make the shelf, he bought a piece of lumber, split it and washed it. Then, as an architectural detail, he hung a transom window above the shelf. The room is decorated with old windows and silk flowers, which Sharon likes to decorate with. She uses coral colors in spring and summer, and cream and white for Christmas.
Looking Glass. Because of their versatility and architectural interest, windows are one of Sharon’s favorite decorative items. He likes to mix old windows with newer ones – he likes the English country cottage look he can create in a builders’ home.

Sharon likes to relax with a bath, so she designed her master bath with spa colors. The guest bathroom has Thibault wallpaper. The mirror is from Hobby Lobby and Sharon added Mason jars to add interest and a cottage bathroom look.
Boho Style Spring Bookshelf Decor
There are two guest rooms in the house. Sharon calls one the “pink room,” with its pink and gray color palette. This was also inspired by a family event. When his son Derek and his wife Kailey got married, their wedding colors were red and cream.
In this room, Sharon placed the remaining wedding props – including a mirror, chandelier and pink cabinet that held stationery.
Pink room. When Sharon’s son got married, the wedding colors included a lot of pink. The pink cabinet was a thrift store for the wedding, which now houses ironstone and milk glass.

• Find thrift store finds that can be repainted or stripped. Incorporate them into your cottage-style decor instead of using furniture off the showroom floor.
• Find the best place for artifacts. Don’t be afraid to arrange a room, stand back and look at it carefully – and rearrange it several times if it doesn’t feel right.
Recycled shelf. Sharon came across an organ top at a thrift store. He painted and cut it, then hung it on the wall and made a flower arrangement form for it. The bench below is from an antique shop. Sharon painted and sanded it, painted it and sanded the edges and carvings to get the look she wanted.
