Energy Monitoring System

By | July 2, 2024

Energy Monitoring System – Energy management is the ultimate requirement for reducing energy costs in industry. There are several industry benefits to using automation. This system monitors the energy consumption of different areas of the plant around the clock.

This collected data gives us an idea of the energy consumption of different areas and also gives us information about sudden changes in the energy demand with additional information such as a specific time, a specific area of the plant and during a specific process.

Energy Monitoring System

Energy monitoring system is achieved using energy meters, PLC and SCADA. Ammeter is used to measure voltage, current, power, power factor and such useful information. A multiple energy meter is connected to an RS 485 network. PLC is used to collect all these data from energy meters using RS 485 protocol.

Features Of Smart Energy Monitoring System

Finally, all this electricity consumption related data is processed and displayed in SCADA by connecting to PLC. This data played an important role in understanding energy consumption behavior and correcting unwanted energy consumption in the industry.

Energy monitoring system is used the following architecture to get communication between energy meters, PLC and SCADA.

In this system we are using PLC and SCADA architecture is as shown in figure. We are using PLC with RS485 protocol to communicate energy meter to PLC. There is also an Ethernet protocol to communicate the PLC with the SCADA PC.

An energy meter is a power monitoring device with several additional features such as it can communicate with Modbus, Ethernet protocols and provide real-time readings to other smart devices. This instrument is used to measure accurate readings of voltage, current, frequency, power, power consumption, power factor and many more such things.

A programmable logic controller (PLC) is used to control the process with the user logic. A PLC combines a processor-based processor, a power supply, input and output modules, and a communication module.

The logic program in the form of LAD (ladder diagram) or FBD (functional block diagram) is installed or downloaded into the CPU. The processor monitors the inputs and modifies the outputs according to the logic of the user program, which may include Boolean logic, counting, timing, complex mathematical operations, and communication with other smart devices.

The PLC is very popular due to its compact design, flexibility and powerful instruction set, making it the perfect solution for controlling a wide range of applications. The processor provides a PROFINET port for communication over a PROFINET network. Communication modules are available for communication over RS485 or RS232 networks.

Control monitoring and data acquisition is software for overseeing, managing and collecting data from the process. Therefore, we can say that SCADA systems are used to monitor and control physical processes related to industry and infrastructure on a large scale and over long distances.

In this energy monitoring system, SCADA is used to see current readings of energy meters as well as to collect historical data for future use. Also, SCADA is used to generate a report on essential readings such as hourly, daily, weekly and monthly power consumption. Steps to collect readings from an energy meter

In a first step, data is collected from different energy meters installed in different areas of the industry using the Modbus serial (RS485) protocol. A maximum of 32 energy meters are connected in one RS485 network. So if we have more energy meters then we can use multiple RS485 networks.

In the second step, this RS485 network is connected to the PLC. A logic program is downloaded to the PLC using the appropriate software. If we have multiple RS485 networks then each network is connected to a different PLC.

In the third step, these multiple PLCs are connected in a common network using an Ethernet Hub through the LAN protocol.

Then in the final step, the SCADA PC is connected to this network to collect all the data from the different energy meters. SCADA software  is used to monitor and record this data for future use or analysis. Why we use an energy monitoring system More and more homes are making energy efficiency a priority. Not only is it a responsible way to reduce your environmental impact, but it can add up to big savings on your energy bills every month. But what can be done to make your home more efficient? Along with a home energy audit, a smart home energy monitor is an energy-saving device that can make a big difference.

A smart home energy monitor is a gadget that fits into your home’s electrical panel. The unit then monitors energy usage throughout your home, showing you energy usage patterns and even real-time data.

It gives you an accurate picture of the amount of energy your home uses to help break down your electricity bill. A smart home energy monitor can even give you a baseline of electricity usage when devices are not in use, as well as data on how much energy individual devices are using. It can give you the kind of specific data about your electricity usage needed to make the appropriate changes and upgrades to your home.

A smart home energy monitoring system is relatively simple. Start by attaching it to your home breaker box. The device then works by not only monitoring energy use throughout the home, but also by identifying the unique energy signatures of individual devices and appliances.

Depending on the type of monitor you choose, you can monitor how much energy these devices use when they’re on, how often they’re used, how much they cost per month to use, and more. This gives you comprehensive insight into your electricity usage to help you identify ways to be more energy efficient. Pairing a smart home energy monitor with other products like smart thermostats and smart plugs can help you take control of your home’s daily energy use.

“You can see your energy usage in real time, where you’re using it, how many dollars, for example, your air conditioner is using. So you can really participate in the dollars you spend and where you spend in your house,” Fasullo said.

Fasullo said their smart energy monitor sends all that data to the cloud, so you’ll have it on your phone. It also comes with weekly tips and tricks and will tell you if you scored well, poorly and what changes you can make to improve your energy savings.

Some of the most popular home energy monitor brands include Sense, Eeydro, Efergy, Neurio, Smappee and Emporia Energy. There are other brands out there too, but these are the biggest names. Below is more information about each one and the systems they offer.

Iot Energy Monitoring Series

The Sense Energy Monitor offers a simple way to monitor your energy consumption. The brand offers both solar and standard variants that connect to almost any existing breaker panel with ease. The cool thing about this system is that it connects to a Sense app that provides real-time energy data whenever you want.

The Sense will break down energy usage in a way that the average electricity bill will not. This makes it possible to view energy consumption better and more deeply than ever before. At $299.99, it’s a bit pricey, but it’s one of the best options for detailed, real-time breakdowns of your home’s energy usage and even includes goal-setting features and alerts.

Eyedro offers four different home energy monitoring options, including two that can track your home’s solar output. Their prices range from $99 to $299, depending on which one you choose.

The non-solar Eyedro sensors are slightly more affordable, but there are limitations compared to the Sense. For one, it is much more difficult to connect to your Wi-Fi internet as it will require an ethernet connection or a wireless mesh setup. Additionally, it will not connect to any smart home devices or systems.

Home Energy Monitoring Systems

Eyedro still offers the same simple interface that shows a breakdown of energy production by device for real-time data and energy insights. You can set up daily, weekly, monthly and yearly monitoring reports for a controlled monitoring experience.

Efergy offers a wide range of energy monitors for smart homes. This includes online energy monitoring options that allow you to track your energy usage online and via an app, or systems that include a wireless home monitor. Efergy systems offer a cost-effective way to monitor your home’s electricity production.

Efergy sensors connect easily to any home electrical box for quick and easy installation that does not require an electrician. The sensor then sends your energy data to a wireless monitor or Wi-Fi enabled hub.

The Efergy wireless monitors offer a portable, compact interface to help you monitor your energy usage. It can be placed anywhere in the home and uses a large memory to store data that can be tracked monthly, weekly or daily. It even has an audio alarm that lets you know if there is too much power consumption.
